Update 0.1.0 - Development officially started
Hi all!
With the addition of a new noise function for the terrain generation I have officially started development on the planet generator! Moving forward the plan is to develop the planet generation technology, adding to it, improving the results, and optimizing the algorithm and final product along the way. Once I'm happy with the planet generator I will move on to develop a prototype of the game I have planned to build on top of it. Right now the idea is in its infancy but the game is planned to be a slow-burn trading/transportation game taking place on a inhospitable post-apocalyptic planet.
Currently the features planned for the planet generator are:
- Runtime customizable parameters for the procedural sky.
- Day/night cycle
- Procedural biomes with different terrain parameters and materials.
- Procedural foliage and landmark placement.
The new noise function that I added to the project produces vastly more interesting and realistic terrain as I have tried to capture in these screenshots:
The noise function used here is based on something called Uber Noise and I will soon be making a more in-depth post about how I implemented it and use it to generate the terrain.
And that's it for this announcement/update, hope you have an awesome day and goodbye!
